Hi, I'm Brian, and I am a design-aholic. I'm pretty much a drama club nerd turned psychologist, user experience (UX) designer/researcher, and technology geek. I got into web and visual design while paying for college, and I've since then published a few papers (see them on academia.edu), co-founded the Universalis student association, started fencing, and travel whenever I can.

Right now, I'm working as a User Experience Consultant for User Intelligence in Amsterdam and, in my spare time, supporting metaLAB remotely on an mLearning project for young people in South Africa and writing my blog.

Bsmrt

User Experience for Mobile ICT4D
for metaLAB;  with MXit Lifestyle

September 2009 - ongoing

Goals

Bsmrt works to empower vulnerable youth in Africa to enrich their own lives by providing them with information and education tools at no charge.

Process

I got the opportunity to jump into the early stages of Bsmrt's development. Besides working on the information architecture and display design, I also lead development of our quality assurance and testing processes as well as our documentation. Now, I am helping to incorporate new features and move Bsmrt onto multiple platforms.

Learned

This project is giving me a chance to explore not only mobile UX but also ICT4D, both fascinating fields.

Remember the User

Graduation Internship; Océ N.V.USITU/e

January - September, 2009

Goals

My graduation internship at Océ was about optimizing the design department's processes of storing and sharing user information and finding users for research.

Process

This was a full research and design project, meaning I carried out interviews, affinity clustering sessions, brainstorming and conceptualization, expert reviews, redesign, prototyping, user testing, iteration, and reporting.

Learned

There, I got some insight into company dynamics and used Drupal and PHP for the first time. Also, the project earned me an "A" as my final grade for my USI degree!

I/O Devices and Controllers

Tangible Prototyping Course for USI

July, 2008; 1 week

Goals

Our instructor Bill wanted us to make something with phidgets that could be played like a musical instrument, with the ability to improvise and make serendipitous mistakes.

Process

My teammate Frank and I used Wiimotes, MaxMSP, and Phidgets to make an old-school, 8-bit music performance. I built the stage and set up the phidgets to respond to inputs from the wiimotes.

Learned

It was interesting to use Wiimotes as instruments and connect moving motors to the musical controls.

InvisiMouse

Multimodal Interaction Course Project; for USI

June, 2008; 1 week

Goals

This was the practical assignment for our Multimodal Perception and Interaction course. Our concept was the InvisiMouse

Process

We ended up with a working, multi-touch prototype using a Wiimote and IR LED's, which we tested with a photo viewer application and a Tetris game.

Learned

This was a great opportunity to think outside the computer and design a tangible product; we had to think about components and materials.

BBC Health Redesign

Website redesign assignment for USI

February, 2008; 2 weeks

Goals

Our assignment for the Social User Interface Design course was to redesign a health website for teens. We chose BBC Health, even though it's not just for teens.

Process

We made a redesign and mocked it up for validation, done via online questionnaire. We started our requirements gathering with this article by Jakob Nielsen.

Learned

Beyond breaking my preconceptions about usability for teenagers, this project put me in an ultra-diverse team.

Chicken Wars

Adobe Flash design assignment for USI

November, 2007; 1 week

Goals

The assignment was to use Adobe Flash to create a multiplayer game with multiple styles of play.

Process

Our first idea was rebel soldier game, but we took the gameplay concept and applied a farm metaphor to it, creating Chicken Wars.

Learned

The biggest lesson: changing the visual metaphor of something can totally change its character. If the players were soldiers instead of chickens, it would feel like a different game.
